Artificial grass vs real grass: which suits your garden?
Neither is better for every garden. It comes down to how the lawn is used, how much shade and foot traffic it gets, and how much time you want to spend looking after it.
- Artificial grass
- Costs more to lay but stays green all year with no mowing, feeding or watering. A good fit for shady corners where grass struggles, family and dog areas that get churned up, and anyone who wants the garden usable straight after rain.
- New turf
- Cheaper to lay, feels and smells like a real lawn, stays cooler in summer and is better for wildlife. It needs regular mowing and some care, and heavily used or very shady patches can wear.
Plenty of gardens use both: real turf in the sunny open part, artificial grass in the shady strip by the fence or around a play area. We can talk it through at the site visit.
How is artificial grass installed so it drains?
Artificial grass lets rain through small holes in its backing, so the base below has to take that water away. Laid straight onto soil, especially the heavy clay common around Ashfield and Mansfield, it will puddle, smell and go lumpy.
We lift the old lawn and dig out the ground, then lay and compact a free-draining stone sub-base, finish it with a fine, level laying course and add a weed membrane. The grass is rolled out with the pile running the same way on every piece, joined with seaming tape and adhesive so the joins disappear, and trimmed tight to the edges.
How much do artificial grass and turfing cost per m²?
These rates come straight from our price guide. The final price depends on the size and shape of the lawn, the grass or turf you choose, how much of the old lawn and soil has to be removed, the edging, levelling on a sloping plot and access to the back garden.

What edging does artificial grass need?
The edges are where a poor install shows first: the grass lifts, creeps or gaps open up against paving. Every edge needs something solid to fix to. Depending on the garden that can be treated timber, sleepers, composite or metal edging, or a paved or concrete border the grass is trimmed and fixed against.
Where the lawn meets a patio we set the levels so the grass sits neatly at or just below the paving, which also helps water run off the patio and away.
What does lawn turfing involve?
Good turf laying starts with good soil. We remove the old lawn and weeds, cultivate and level the ground, rake in a pre-turf fertiliser and firm it evenly, then lay the rolls in a staggered, brick-like pattern with tight joins so the new lawn knits together quickly.
New turf needs watering every day or two in dry weather for the first few weeks, and it is best kept off until it has rooted into the soil. It can be laid for much of the year, but not on frozen or waterlogged ground or in a drought; spring and autumn are easiest.

Yes, as long as it is laid on a free-draining base. Dogs cannot dig it up or wear muddy patches into it, and urine drains through the backing into the sub-base below. Pick up solids as normal and rinse the area with a hose regularly, more often in warm weather, to keep it fresh.
It can get noticeably warmer than real grass in strong, direct sun, so a quick spray with the hose cools it down before children or pets play on it. Sunlight concentrated by some windows and glass can even damage the fibres, which is worth considering when deciding where it goes.
Yes, over a sound, level slab that drains, with a foam underlay so it feels softer underfoot and hides joints and dips. If the concrete does not already fall towards a drain or edge, water will sit under the grass, so we check the levels and drainage first.
Remove leaves and debris with a leaf blower or a plastic rake, brush the pile against its direction now and then to keep it upright, and rinse it down occasionally. Keep barbecues, fire pits and cigarettes off it, as heat can melt the fibres.
Keep foot traffic to a minimum for the first two to three weeks while the roots grow into the soil, and water it every day or two in dry weather. When it has rooted, you will not be able to lift a corner, and it is ready for a first light mow with the blades set high.
